Surprisingly, it's not all Beatles, Who, Stones and Small Faces on Mars... this is some of the far out stuff available on little silvery plastic discs that's slipping in amongst the familiar black vinyl at the moment... Molly will get round to summing up what she likes about each of them as and when she can be bothered, but until then you'll have to live dangerously and just check them out anyway.

The Darkness

proud member of The Forces Of DarknessThe band singlehandedly returning rock music back into the charts - thank God! These guys are like the real Spinal Tap, except they're more talented and don't take themselves too seriously. Their music is like a fresher sounding, more fun version of 70s rock and their look is classic rock all the way. They have to be seen and heard to be believed and are well worth checking out. If you haven't been shattering all the glass in sight by wandering round singing the high pitched chorus of their "I Believe In A Thing Call Love" you must have been living under a rock for the past year. Check out the video section on their site if you haven't yet encountered them, and if you have come across them, get voting for them at the Brit Awards cos if this band don't win this year I'll be shattered!

Paul Weller

Unamerican

Divinely dark modern rock music, go for the lyrics *bigtime*... from their self-titled debut album, I'd recommend "If This Is The End" which seems to be a very deep caring soft love song but ends up very dark and searing. "That's How It Goes" has the beat soaring a bit, and the vocals are quite smooth for rock music. The lyrics on "Spiritual" are just divinely pessimistic and intricate, and the music is just sheer class. From the clips on the website, I rather like the very soft "I Was Wrong" but the drum mix on that is rather off, very clunky. They also did a fabulous cover of Naked Eye on the album "Substitute: The Songs Of The Who"

The Burn

The Handcuffs

The darker, more rock'n'roll side of Big Hello. "Jet Baby" is so damn catchy it's never going to get out of your head *ever*, you'll wake in the night singing the lyrics, and people who've never heard of the band will find themselves wandering around humming the tune just cos they were stood next to you in the supermarket queue... but thankfully it's fantastic enough not to drive you completely insane. My personal favourite would have to be "Slut Machine" cos the lyrics are absoloutely *classic* to the point where I'm giggling with delight, and they're wrapped round a lovely bouncy out there tune with tons of drums and grating guitar work.

The Jeevas

Big Hello

Some fantastically wild pop music with classy lyrics, very classy vocals and absoloutely *stunning* drumming... "Pretty World In The Dark" is the one I think is probably the best overall song, catchy, great lyrics, drumming as always is fabulous, and the tune is really going somewhere. "Oh No, Oh No" is the one I overplay, just cos it's one of those songs that latches onto your soul for dear life and won't let go, quite soft, but with a perfectly catchy beat. If you're into drums you have to go straight for "If You Don't Stop Your Crying" for the instant drumming gratification. "I Don't Like You" could stand endless repeat playing, and "O' Canada" is just never going to get out of your head.

The Thrills

Rachel Fuller

Beautiful and soft melodies of piano and vocals filled with dark intense imagery and backed with rock guitar and drums, and the unthinkable idea of decent synthesizers! "Into My Heart" begins with a very delicate and classically beautiful piano and drifts rock style into an intense obsessive lyric sung delicately and innocently. "Ghost In The Room" is a nice twist on the familar style of the soft catchy pop rock song with lyrics of regret.
